SafeTrack is an extensive maintenance program currently taking place on WMATA's Metro system. The program is intended to make major repairs to rehabilitate the system, accomplishing about three years of work in a single year. The program is in reaction to various safety issues and recommendations which have plagued the system in recent years.
SafeTrack will have a significant impact on commuting in the Washington DC area. As part of the program, the Metro system will close at midnight every day, and will include 15 "Safety Surges", listed below, which will show down portions of each line. While WMATA and local municipalities intend to provide special bus service, each of these surges is likely to be quite disruptive as commuters seek alternatives.
