Riding in the DC Metro System

Riding in the DC Metro System

If you can avoid travelling during the most busy times of the day, cars will have plenty of room to sit or stand. However, DC Metro cars can become packed during the busiest commuting hours of the day.

Train cars provide sitting and standing room. During off-peak time, there is normally plenty of room, but during weekday commutes and special events, cars can become very crowded. It is important to note that seats near the car doors are reserved for the elderly and disabled, and should be forfeited if needed.

Bicycles are also allowed on Metro, except during the busy hours of 7-10 am and 4-7 pm on weekdays, and the 4th of July or during other special events with large crowds. Bicycle riders must use elevators, and should use the end doors (as opposed to the center doors) of any cars. Up to two bicycles are allowed in each car on weekdays, and up to 4 on weekends.
