The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is a commuter rail service with two lines providing weekday service to stations in Northern Virginia. VRE consists of two lines which travel from Manassas and Fredricksburg to Union Station, with several stops along the way. Various VRE locations provide access to many other forms of area transportation, including Amtrak, Metrobus and Metrorail (Washington DC's bus and subway systems).

Since VRE is a commuter service, it only runs Monday through Friday, and morning service is primarily northbound (into Washington DC) while evening service is primarily southbound. While this limits the usefulness of the system for casual travel and tourists, it may be an option if you happen to be near one of this service's Northern Virginia stations.

Additional information about schedule and fares can be found on VRE's website at vre.org.
