Many discount bus services exist, with varying quality. Cheap service started with 'Chinatown buses', between each city's Chinatown. Since then, many players have entered the market. Many other bus services run routes between Washington DC and New York City. They often offer lower or similar prices to Greyhound, but the quality of facilities and service can vary wildly. It is highly recommended to look at reviews from a site, such as yelp!, before making a decision for a cheap fare. A direct route should be around 4-4.5 hours.
